Both Apple and Alphabet are singled out for their fee structures, which are said to contradict the DMA’s requirement of being “free of charge.”

Meta’s subscription service without ads is also under investigation, with regulators urging the company to provide free alternative options.

EU Launches Non-Compliance Probes into Apple, Google, Meta under DMA

The European Commission has initiated five investigations into Apple, Google, and Meta’s compliance with the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust rules. Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust chief, expressed concerns about the companies’ suggested solutions and stated that investigations aim to ensure open and contestable digital markets in Europe.

The probes target various aspects, including anti-steering rules in app stores, self-preferencing on Google’s search engine, browser choice screens, and Meta’s “pay or consent model” for ad targeting. The Commission plans to conclude investigations within the next 12 months.

Additionally, the Commission is examining Apple’s fee structure for distributing apps outside the App Store and Amazon’s potential self-preferencing practices. Meta has been given an additional six months to make Messenger interoperable with other messaging services.

EU Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasized the importance of fair and open digital spaces and warned of heavy fines if companies fail to comply with DMA obligations.

The Commission will inform each gatekeeper of necessary actions to address concerns and outline potential measures. Companies could face fines of up to 10% of their annual global revenue under the DMA, rising to 20% for repeated infringements.
